aQflex™ is an adjustable acoustic system for permanent installation in ceilings. The patented aQflex variable acoustic system adjusts the acoustics of a hall by the push of a button to fit the type of music being played:
ON = inflated = short reverberation time (63-1k Hz)
OFF = deflated = long reverberation time
aQflex is CE-certified and passes fire- and safety requirements worldwide. It can be retracted from the ceiling, although this is not standard.
The aQflex has an absorption coefficient of approx. 0,5 (125-1k Hz) in the densest configuration when mounted directly on the ceiling. This alpha works in the entire ceiling area. When inactive, it is close to zero.
Weight approx. 0.6 kg/meter
Height: 115 cm
Width (inflated): 70 cm
Width (deflated): a few millimeters
Thin reusable plastic.
Available in black or white.
2 years.
The system maybe installed above a suspended, sound-transparent ceiling, making it invisible.
The system includes several absorber rows mounted parallel to each other on tracks flush to the ceiling. The more absorbers, the greater a span of reverberation is obtained, enabling even more types of music to be performed in the same room – all with superb acoustics.
Ideally, the average spacing between absorber rows is 80-100 cm center-to-center. However, they do not have to be spaced evenly but are mounted where there is room in the ceiling. The absorbers are 70 cm wide when fully inflated.
The system takes 120 cm of height to incorporate. It is important to note that they only take up visual space – not acoustical space since they are close to transparent to sound when inactive.
Each absorber is connected to a standard air duct with a connectivity piece. First, the air duct is mounted on one or two parallel walls close to the ceiling. A connectivity piece is placed where the absorber will be mounted to a track.
The tracks are fastened to the ceiling and precisely aligned with the connectivity piece. Absorbers are fitted onto tracks, and the fan and control system are connected.
Below the aQflex absorbers, a sound transparent ceiling may be fitted. The entire system will be more or less invisible, with black mat absorbers and the ceiling and upper walls painted black.
Ventilation, lighting, and sprinklers can be mounted to this lowered ceiling. There are many types of open ceilings for an architect to choose from. Flex Acoustics cooperates with Dampa and Moelven for exciting, beautiful suspended ceilings. A low-cost alternative is, for instance, stage gauze.
NOTE! For retrofit installations, some lighting or ventilation rearranging may be helpful to create as much free space for absorbers in the ceiling as possible.
